Our new PM, Liz Truss says that to grow the size of the pie she is prepared to take on vested interests. In which case will she take on Tory councillors and MP’s in the rural shires who block new housing?
To do so needs a mental switch to long term policy thinking. This is unrealistic without cross-party support locally and nationally. Thinking along these lines means humility, and a sincere commitment to the best interest of the whole country.
If she adopted this mind-set, the PM would capture a major slice of the political centre ground, and even gain the prospect of sharing power following the next general election.
For example, a commitment with the opposition to build over two generations three or four new urban cities with full infrastructure and no cars within an hour of London’s edge, and other cities close to major urban centres would transform sentiment, and long term expectations in the areas. In fact it would turbo-charge their future outlooks. This gives levelling up teeth.
