Whilst it is good news the government is pushing forward with its own ideas for growth between Oxford and Cambridge, they seem to be overlooking the interests of local residents. Whilst these very different interests cannot be allowed to block progress there is no reason their financial best interests must suffer. First it is simply unfair. Second, if such a perception takes hold it will stoke up even more local opposition to local change.
My question to the government is this? When will they announce their policy on blight? Blight will already be adversely impacting local house values. It happens fast, but is invisible. Despite its invisibility its impact for residents wanting to sell or use their equity to secure loans will be biting now. A early policy announcement is needed to show all residents in communities whose local area will change that they are not forgotten. Indeed it is an opportunity to go a step further and announce that besides normal market value compensation, an extra payment will be made, to make good the stress and heartache caused. This gesture is overdue and will pay rich dividends as the means of starving vociferous opponents of local change.
if this policy omission is overlooked much longer, I for one will wonder if this government is competent or badly advised by its civil servants?
